St. Agatha February 5th
Very little is known about Agatha. She was a virgin-martyr of the early
Church, during the reign of the Roman emperior Decius. The place of martyrdom
is often said to be at Catania in Sicily. Rumour has it that after her
martydom she stilled an eruption of Mt. Etna and so has been claimed as
the paron saint of Catania and Palermo. She has been venerated from early
times and her name is included in the Roman Canon.
