Apostleship of Prayer - Saints

January 17 - Saint Antony

Antony was born in Egypt about the year 250. At the age of twenty, after the death of is parents, he gave away his rich inheritance to the poor. He then retreated to the desert where he led a severely ascetical life. He saw the world as being inhabited of devils of all kinds. By his lifestyle he drew many people to him for his prayers and help. He hoped to be a martyr in the persecution of Diocletian. He fearlessly exposed himself to danger while helping those already in prisons When he was 88 he helped St Athanasius in his combating the heresy of Arius. This heresy was to plague the Church for hundreds of years. Antony died at the age of one hundred and five.
