Apostleship of Prayer - Saints

January 22  - Vincent

There is very little known about Vincent. Most of what we know comes from the poet Prudentius and this has been rather freely coloured by the imagination of the compiler. Vincent was ordained deacon by his friend Valerius of Saragossa in Spain. Vincent was martyred due to the decrees of Diocletian and Maximian. Thes Romans emperors had publised their decrees against the clergy in 303, and against the laity in 304. First, Vincent was imprisoned where he was further weakened by starvation. When he would not now sacrifice to the pagan gods, he was racked, placed on a giant gridiron, set in stocks. He died as a result of the torture. There is a story told that the then Roman Emperor, Dacian, being dissatisfied with failures of the torturers, had them tortured. Then, Vincent was thrown back into prison, where he died.
