St Athanasius      May 2nd

Athanasius was born c.297 in Alexandria. He accompanied his brother bishop, Alexander, to the first Council of Nicaea (3250. He took an active part in the debate against the heresy of Arianism. After the death of Alexaander, he became the patriarch of alexandria.He continued to defend the Nicene orthodoxy, especially in Discourses Against the Arians, and was exiled from his see five times between 335 and 365. He died in 373.

The Athanasian Creed is no longer ascribed to him but to a 4th-cent. Western writer.

He has been named a Doctor of the Church.
