Catherine of Siena          April 29

Catherine was born in 1347 in the city of Siena. She was the twenty-third child of Jacopo and Lapa Benincasa. She grew up as an intelligent, cheerful and religious person. So that she could grow closer to God, she joined the Third Order of the Dominicans. Through her prayers and activities she brought peace and harmony wherever she went. In 1378, the Great Schism broke out splitting the Church first by two popes and by three popes. She fought strenuously for the liberty of the papacy and did much for the renewal of Religious Life. She spent the last two years of her life praying for the unity of the Church.
She was a renowned writer on Christian mysticism and has become a Doctor of the Church. Her main written work is The Dialogue. She died in 1380.
