St George           April 23

Over the centuries George has been the victim of very active imaginations. It is praactically certain that he lived and was martyred at Lydda in Palestine. Most likely this occured before the time of Constantine. His life and his willingness to die for the faith is accepted by the Church. George was a patron saint of the Crusades. He is also the patron saint, today, of England.
However the story about George slaying the dragon and rescuing a princess is an Italian fable of the twelfth century.
