Apostleship of Prayer - Saints

June 28 - Saint Irenaeus

Where Irenaeus was born and reared is a mystery. He was involved in many of the Church' controvsies in the second century. In his debating with heretics he was more concerned with winning them over than to prove them to be in error. He was consecrated Bishop of Lyons, where he became actively involved in the debates with the Gnostics. The teaching of the Gnostics was not only causing confusion among the Christians in Gaul but also it was winning converts. Irenaeus set about reading the tenets of the Gnostics and he contrasted themwith the teachings of Scripture. From all this arose a system of theology in five volumes, which were to prove of immense value in subsequent centuries.
Where he died and how he died is as much a mystery as was his birth.
