Apostleship of Prayer - Saints

June 1 - Saint Justin

Justin was born of a pagan family in Nablus in Samaria towards the beginning of the second century. He was, from his youth, filled with a deep longing for truth. Hence, he attended many schools of Philosophy, being principally attracted to the thought of Plato. After much searching he found that the Christian religion answered the great questions he was asking about the meaning of life and existence. After his conversion he became the first Christian Philosopher and used his philosophy to defend the Christian religion. However there are only two Apologies and his Dialogue now remaining. Implicit in his thought is his belief that a person searching for truth will ultimately come to Christ. He opened an Academy in Rome and made public disputations a part of its life. A disgruntled debating opponent denounced him to the authorities and so Justin was brought to trial. He refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods and so was condemned to death. He was martyred in the year 165 under the reign of Marcus Aurelius.
