Apostleship of Prayer SaintsMark, The Evangelist April 25th.
Most of what we know about Mark comes from the Acts of the Apostles. The first Gospel is said to have been written by Mark. It is the oldest and also the shortest. From it large amounts of Gospels of Matthew and Luke have been derived. Mark portrays Jesus as being rejected by mankind but at the same time He is to be seen as God's triumphant messenger. It was probably written for the converts in Rome between 60 and 70 AD. This gospel gradually reveals the scandal of a crucified Messiah. Peter is said to have been the source of the Gospel as he calls Mark "my son".
Mark was not one of the Apostles. There does not seem to be any evidence to say that he knew Jesus but some scholars believe that it was Mark who ran away naked from the Garden of Gethsemani. (Mark 14: 51 - 52)
He is the patron saint of Venice and it is held that the large cathedral there contains his relics. Mark fulfilled in his life time what every Christian is called to do and that is to proclaim the Good News.Return to Home Page.
