St. Peter Chanel      April 28

Peter Chanel was born in the town of Cuet in France in the year 1803. He was martyred, by being clubbed to death, on island of Futuna, in the New Hebrides,  in the year 1841.
He first joined the diocesan priesthood and he revived a parish by the simple method of showing great devotion to the sick. Desiring to be a missionary, he joined the Society of Mary (Marists) but was entrusted with the teaching of young Marists in formation.
After five years he was sent to Oceania to bring Christ to the islanders. He struggled with the language and was able to baptise a few. When it came to baptising the chief's son, a climax was reached and he was clubbed to death.
Within in two years the whole island was converted and has remained so.
