Apostleship of Prayer        Saints

Pius V, Pope       April 30th.

Pius was born near Alessandria in Italy in1504.He joined the Dominican Order where he spent long hours with his God in prayer, fasted rigorously. The rule of Dominic was his guide line all of his life. He was also a gifted lecturer in theology. He was elected Pope three years after the end of the Council of Trent. He drew up a new missal, a new breviary and a new catechism. He vigorously carried out the reforms of the Council. He did much to reunite the Church against the attacks coming from the Reformers, from the young states seeking their independence. He actively promoted the spreading of the faith and of the new liturgy
He encountered much opposition from from England, from France and from the Netherlands. All this hindered his war with the Turks, who were finally defeated at the famous battle of Lepanto, in 1571.
He died in 1572.
