June 22 - Saint Thomas More

Thomas More was born in the year 1477 and was beheaded on Tower Hill, London, on June 6, 1535. He had an outstanding career at the University of Oxford. He became an eminent lawyer, a great scholar and the father of four children. He had been a friend of Henry VIII from their early days together. After he had a falling out with Cardinal Wolsey, Henry appointed More to position of Chancellor of England. He wrote much about civil affairs and often in defence of Christianity. More would not support the King with regard to his divorce of Catherine of Aragon so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. Also he could not accept Henry as head of the Church in England. So on the king's order he was martyred.
Four hundred years later in 1935, he was canonized as a Saint. More was a supreme diplomat and a counsellor. but he did not compromise his Christian values in order to please the king. Such people as Thomas More are urgently needed in the world of politics today.
