Apostleship of Prayer - Saints
August 28 - St Augustine"Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless till they rest in You." Augustine was born at Thagaste in Africa in the year 354. In his early life he had accepted the teaching of the Manicheans and lived quite an immoral life. He was an outstanding student of Philosophy and in 383 he made a journey to Rome to teach rhetoric there. On reaching Rome he travelled to Milan, where he met St. Ambrose who became his spiritual director. God speaking to him through the Scriptures converted Augustine's love of life to a life of love. He was baptised by Ambrose at Easter, 387. He returned to Carthage where, at the age of 36, he was ordained a priest. Five years later he was consecrated Bishop of Hippo, where he directed is flock for thirty-four years. He taught his people by sermons, and writings. Thus the sinner became a saint. He strove to combat the errors of his time, especially in the areas of morality, society and politics. He was both feared and loved.
He died in the year 430.
