Apostleship of Prayer - Saints

July 3 - Saint Peter Chrysologus

Peter was born in Imola which was about forty-eight kilometers west of Ravenna about 406 AD. Peter was only a deacon when he was chosen to be the bishop of Ravenna about 439. He found a strong pagan influence and many lapsed Catholics. He was greatly helped by his mother, Galla Placidia, in his reforms and building projects. Through their work paganism was eradicated and the faith restored. He was a great friend of Leo the Great whose teaching on the Incarnation he strongly supported. Peter Chrysologus was a great preacher and became known as the preacher "of golden words". Many of his homilis are still extant. Peter died at Imola on the 31st July, 450. He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1729.
