Apostleship of Prayer - Saints

August 21  - St Pius X

Pius X is best remembered for his encouragement of frequent receptions of the Eucharist. He was born in Venice in the year 1835, the second of ten children in a poor Italian family. Soon after he had been ordained a priest he became the first bishop of Mantua where he excelled in the pastoral duties of a bishop. He then became the Patriarch of Venice. He was elected Pope in 1903. He was a simple man, lived poorly and was noted for his fortitude against governments who wanted control over the Papacy. He urged Italian Catholics to become involved in politics. His pastoral care of the poor was always a deep concern of his pastoral life. He  battled against the heresies of his time. He died on this day in 1914.
