Apostleship of Prayer - Saints
July 22 - Saint Mary Magdalene
Except for Mary, the mother of Jesus, few women are honoured more in the New Testament than Mary Magdalene. Mary was one of Jesus' first disciples. She has often been associated with the unnamed sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus in Luke 7: 36 - 50.
Most scripture scholars today would argue that there is no basis for associating Mary of Magdala with this woman. She was one of those who assisted Jesus in his work out of their own means.
She was with Mary, the mother of Jesus, on Calvary where Jesus died. She was the first person that Scripture records to whom the Risen Jesus appeared. At first the apostles did not believe Mary when she informed them of the Resurrection.
Devotion to Mary Magdalene spread throughout the Church especially in the twelfth century.
