Apostleship of Prayer - Saints

October 31st - Alphonsus Rodriguez (1533 -1617)

Among Jesuits, one of the best loved of all their saints is a Spaniard, Alphonsus Rodriguez, perhaps not well known to others. Alphonsus Rodriguez was a husband and a father, and a businessman, before he entered the Society of Jesus as a Brother at the age of thirty-eight after the death of his wife and children. He spent the next forty-six years of his life as guestmaster and doorkeeper at Palma in Majorca. In his simple hidden life he can be said to have been the gentle influence who guided the troubled, uncertain Peter Claver, to his missionary vocation to work for the black slaves in Cartagena, Columbia. His "life without event" is our inspiration revealing the power of prayer in our lives and work.
