Apostleship of Prayer -- Saints
St. John DamasceneDecember 4
John of Damascus was born around 657 in the Muslim city of Damascus. In fact he spent his whole life under the rule of the Muslims. His father was a wealthy Christian and was the person in charge of the revenue. John was educated by Cosmas, a Sicilian monk, whom John's father has rescued from the Muslims. After the death of his father John also became the master of the revenue. He later became a monk and then a priest near the city of Bethlemen. John was famous as a scholar and one of his works was The Fount of Wisdom which had a great influence on Christian theology. The book is a good summary of what the Greek Fathers taught on the Christian faith. The doctrines of the Trinity, the Real Presence, and the Incarnation are some of the main topics dealt with in this book. He died in 750 and was declared a Doctor of the Churrch in 1890.
